This modification will allow you to shut the light off when the light head is screwed on tightly (all the way). A slight twist (1/8th turn) will allow turn the light on. This modification should also work for the Halcyon Scout lights, although I have not tried it with that light.

This modification has the following advantages:

  • You won't accidentally unscrew the head too far and flood the light because the light comes on well before the first o-ring is exposed. When the light comes from the factory you must leave the light unscrewed slightly to make the tight turn off. To turn it on you have to screw it in. However, if you accidentally unscrew the light out instead you can allow water to bypass the o-rings.

  • The light does not turn on accidentally because the light head is screwed on tightly. In the factory configuration the light head is turned off in the slightly unscrewed position and it can "roll on" accidentally. It is also more susceptible to being turned on due to the head being pushed in while under pressure. When modified, the head is screwed on tightly and will not compress.

  • You do not have to readjust the copper strip each time you change batteries (this is an issue for Little Johnsons and older Scouts where the copper strip is not secured).
