Halcyon Dress Up

If you want to dress them up "ala" Halcyon, you can get nylon tube webbing at your local camping store in many colors (including black, the only color any REAL diver would wear). I've found this preferable to the hose as it will dry out between dives and doesn't stress the spring when putting on or taking off your fins the way the hose. I'm in the process of changing all of mine over to the nylon strap (Figure Y)

Jackie Smith Copy

If all this seems like too much work you can buy a piece of round delrin ?" dia and drill a ?" hole in it sideways and a 1/8" hole lengthwise and attach it the same way and you will have your own Jackie Smith straps (Figure Z).

Length

You may shorten the length of the blocks before attaching them to the fins as Joe did with the CSS-1. Just don't shorten them so much that your spring hangs out all exposed! Joe also did a nice job of easing the edges and chamfering the hole in the block. I'll get around to doing that real soon now - but first I'm going diving!

In Closing

If you follow these directions you can make the CSS-1 / DSS-2 for less than $20, considerably less than ? of the price of the cheapest models out there and less than 1/3 of the Halycon. In addition you will have SS that look better than anything on the market, AND be custom fitted to you. And you can join the ranks of divers of days gone by that could puff out their chest and say, "Oh those, I made them myself."

Oh, and one last thing, make sure you run a piece of cave line inside the spring to limit the stretch of the spring - if you don't you WILL be buying more springs when you over-stretch them.

Should you have any questions feel free to PM me on The Deco Stop or e-mail me.
